Last night at 9:00 pm one of my partner's patients called with a long diatribe about shoulder pain she's had since JULY. She said she'd go to the ER (we don't ever call pain meds in at night) but "I have to be admitted because I can't afford the $70 for the ER copay." And here I thought I'd already heard everything....
recently a patient filled out a complaint after discharge saying the hospital needed more doctors. and this because i didn't immediately down tools (i was doing a laparotomy at the time) and rush over to give him an immodium tablet the moment he demanded one. both he and his mother seemed to be convinced the world revolves around him. who knows, maybe they are right.
Frustrated resident came to me...guy on the phone wanted vicodin, and since resident said know, wanted to talk to a "real" doctor. Big mistake.
I got on the phone as asked what happened to his rx from last week---"lost it". I said, "If I gave you a hundred dollar bill and you lost it...wait, you wouldn't, would you?" If I had a hundred bucks for every time someone told me their dog ate it, they lost it, it fell out of their coat on the bus, well, I could work for free. He hung up on me.
I wish they'd bring back the days when doctors visited patients. No more missed appointments on the patients' part.
It is a pain when the entire day is scheduled around 5 minutes of actual doctor visit. It does annoy me that I do all the heavy lifting in the mental recovery and all I see the doc doing is giving an autograph on the same old pill form, and I am paying for that? It does feel like a waste, and I see why this lady doesn't want to come around.
I'm a board certified family doctor. I love my job, but I'm not on the clock, or I wouldn't be playing around in the blogosphere. Please do not pursue any personal medical advice, this blog is here strictly for entertainment purposes. Any patient anecdotes found here have had several identifying factors altered so as to make the original anecdote completely unrecognizable. If you think you recognize yourself or someone you know, you are wrong.

Bah! how frustrating... Strolled on over from Dinah, Clink & Roy's Shrink Rap blog. I think I'll add you to my blog roll and stick around a bit!
Forgive me for laughing. Considering having these done up in calligraphy and hanging them on my wall.

Maybe you should just put in a drive-thru window.
